OiER contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals by leveraging emerging technologies and especially information and communication technologies (ICTs) to set cities on a development course characterized by environmental sustainability, resilience, and equitable social and economic growth.
OiER’s support to cities is given in the areas of smart sustainable city planning, strategy, project development, financing, implementation, and evaluation. OiER contains a large international expert pool giving advice and support to cities participating in the program.
The mission is to increase public and business awareness regarding city problems and challenges. OiER wants to achieve this by offering access to the knowledge and experiences gained in the activities of the most recent work done by all experts in the organization as well as by actively engaging in capacity development.
The first step in the process is to obtain accurate information concerning the city and priority projects. The evaluation of the defined Smart Sustainable City KPIs and the rating provides a first assessment.
A guide of practical information has to be issued concerning the course of action when creating a project. It is important to develop appropriate working methods and procedures in order to implement an effective and efficient project.
A task-force of experts on smart sustainable city projects has to be set up to enable a seamless project implementation.
The overall goal is to connect city stakeholders, including the private business sector (suppliers), investors, financial services institutions and donors to identify and develop smart sustainable city projects.
The OiER, is the pathway to successful partnerships between cities and the private sector as the organization provides both process and framework for liaising between the member states of the UN, cities and the private sector. The vision of OiER is to incentivize innovative partners to collaborate with local/regional governments and the United Nations to build influential, transformational and scalable solutions for cities. Cities address a detailed selection of 12 identified sectors: Finance Institutions, Energy, Urban Mobility, Renewable Energy, Information Communication Technologies, Urban Development Service, E-Mobility, Safety & Security, Recycling & Waste Management, Infrastructure Construction, Healthcare Infrastructure, Green Housing & Facility Technology.
OiER is working to establish a leading cutting-edge finance facility that will support cities in developing enhanced pipelines for their priority projects. At this stage, several participating cities are having their projects reviewed by the OiER finance team for advice and guidance in possible matchmaking.
OiER and its team of finance experts also support in delivering financial guidelines for smart sustainable cities. Setting up guidelines for project financing is a core task of the United for Smart Sustainable Cities Programme.
